1. Governing Rules

The Koh Chang Ocean Race: The Emerald Challenge will be governed by:

The official rules as published in the Notice of Race (NOR)
The Race Instructions issued by the Race Director
ICF (International Canoe Federation) safety guidelines where applicable
Any amendments published by the Race Committee before or during the event

In case of any conflict, the Race Instructions shall prevail over the NOR.

2. Eligibility

The race is open to:

International Division: Open to all nationalities
Thai Division: Thai citizens only (Thai national ID required)
All participants must be 18 years or older by calendar year (2026 minus birth year). Under-18 athletes require written parental/guardian consent
All participants must be able to swim at least 200 meters unaided
Athletes must be in good physical condition and capable of self-rescue
Valid personal accident/health insurance is strongly recommended

4.1 Gender / เพศ

4.2 International Division / รุ่นนานาชาติ

Open to all nationalities — one class only.

4.3 Thai Division / รุ่นไทย

Thai nationals only — four age-group classes.

Age Calculation / การคำนวณอายุ: Age is calculated by calendar year (2026 minus birth year).

คำนวณอายุโดยนับปี พ.ศ. (พ.ศ. 2569 ลบ พ.ศ. เกิด) ไม่ใช่นับจากวันแข่งขัน

Note: Thai athletes competing in the International Open category will automatically receive Dual Ranking eligibility. However, to promote sportsmanship and wider recognition, the Step-Down Rule applies: athletes may only claim the single highest-valued prize and trophy for which they qualify.

หมายเหตุ: นักกีฬาชาวไทยที่ลงแข่งขันในรุ่น International Open จะได้รับสิทธิ์จัดอันดับคู่ หรือ Dual Ranking โดยอัตโนมัติ อย่างไรก็ตาม เพื่อเป็นการกระจายโอกาสและส่งเสริมสปิริตนักกีฬา คณะกรรมการจะใช้กฎ Step-Down โดยนักกีฬาจะสามารถรับถ้วยและเงินรางวัลที่มีมูลค่าสูงสุดที่ตนทำผลงานได้เพียง 1 รางวัลเท่านั้น

4.4 Disciplines & Race Courses / ประเภทกีฬาและเส้นทาง

Surfski — Long Distance Race (25 KM) / แข่งพายทางไกล 25 กม.
Route: Salakpetch Bridge → Ko Ngam → Koh Lao Ya Nai → Wai Chek Beach → Salakpetch Bridge
OC1 (Outrigger Canoe) — Long Distance Race (25 KM) / แข่งพายทางไกล 25 กม.
Route: Same as Surfski (25 KM course)
SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard):
- Long Distance (15 KM) / ทางไกล — Salakpetch Bridge → Koh Lao Ya Nai → Salakpetch Bridge
- Technical (1 KM) / เทคนิค — Salakpetch Bay (buoy turns & board control)
- Sprint (200 M) / สปรินท์ — Salakpetch Bay (head-to-head beach sprint)
Kayak — Long Distance Race (15 KM) / แข่งพายทางไกล 15 กม.
Route: Salakpetch Bridge → Koh Lao Ya Nai → Salakpetch Bridge

RFID Chip Timing System — All races timed with split-second accuracy.

Athletes may enter one or multiple SUP events depending on their registration type.
นักกีฬาสามารถเลือกลงแข่ง SUP ได้ 1 หรือหลายรายการ ขึ้นอยู่กับประเภทการสมัคร

5. Safety Regulations

All athletes must comply with the following safety requirements:

PFD (Personal Flotation Device/Life jacket) — mandatory for all paddlers during racing
Leash — must be worn at all times while on the water (board/craft leash)
Adequate hydration — athletes should carry water for long distance events
Whistle or sound signaling device attached to PFD
Appropriate sun protection (hat, sunscreen, rash guard recommended)
Craft must be in seaworthy condition and inspected before the race
Athletes must attend the mandatory safety briefing before their first race

Safety is paramount. The Race Director reserves the right to disqualify any athlete not meeting safety requirements or exhibiting unsafe behavior on the water. Safety boats will be on course at all times.

6. Racing Rules

Athletes must follow the designated course and round all turn buoys in the correct order
Drafting rules may apply as specified in the Race Instructions for each category
Athletes must not receive external assistance during the race (self-supported)
GPS tracking devices must be worn/activated during all races if provided
The Race Director may shorten, delay, or cancel a race due to weather or safety concerns
Athletes who retire from a race must notify a safety boat or the Race Committee

7. Scoring

Results are based on elapsed time from start to finish
Separate standings for International and Thai divisions
SUP multi-event athletes: cumulative results across entered events
In case of a tie, the athlete with the faster time in the longest distance event prevails
DNS (Did Not Start), DNF (Did Not Finish), and DSQ (Disqualified) classifications apply
